Double Major:
Chemistry & Community, Environment, and Planning
I am pursuing a double major at the University of Washington in Chemistry and Community, Environment, and Planning (CEP). After following an academic path in STEM for two years, I did not want to give it up. Chemistry was my favorite subject in high school and my passion for chemistry has continued to grow. I found an opportunity to expand my education beyond chemistry by adding CEP as a major.
What is Community, Environment, and Planning or CEP? It is a small two-year program that consists of two cohorts of roughly 35 students each. It is a student run major that enables students to take control and be intentional with their academic pursuits. There are six committees within the major, and I have been apart of Outreach and Admission Committee for all six of my quarters in CEP. As a committee, we work to engage with the greater UW community as well as the surrounding community colleges to teach students about CEP. I have presented in front of several classrooms and hosted open houses to further extend outreach. I have also been greatly involved in interviewing applicants to the major. I have worked hard to prepare the entire major for interview season, as well as improve various aspects of the interview, such as questions and interviewer dynamic.
With a desire to go into the environmental field, I believe chemistry compliments CEP, a major that focuses on communities, the environment, and planning. I believe chemistry creates a greater understanding of the environment around me through molecular interactions and enables me to know even more about my environmental pursuits.
I believe this double major will help me maintain the academic rigor that I enjoy, while broadening my scope of study. It helps me to engage with various type of peoples, who challenge me to think differently and push me outside of my comfort zone.
